Following a huge community effort which included fundraising, voluntary labour and donations from local businesses and with the support of a Rural Development Programme grant of over €103,330 from West Limerick Resources the recently renovated Kilfinny Parish Hall will be officially reopened on Sunday May 13th at 5pm.

Kilfinny Community Council are delighted to announce that they plan to hold a community get together with food and entertainment to mark the official reopening of their local parish hall which has undergone an extensive renovation over the last eight months. The former primary school has been used as a community facility since the mid sixties but over time had fallen into serious disrepair. However recognizing the value to the local community, a group of volunteers took it upon themselves to mobilize local support and breathe new life into the tired old building at the heart of the small West Limerick village.

“In 2008 Kilfinny reestablished its community council to help drive and direct the development of the local community,” explained Eleanor McLoughlin, Rural Development Programme Project Officer with West Limerick Resources. “The group quickly decided that the refurbishment of the Parish Hall should be a priority and undertook some basic painting and maintenance work on a voluntary basis in order to encourage increased usage. This work however was mostly cosmetic and the group decided that a full refurbishment was essential to ensure that the facility could offer a comfortable and functional facility capable of catering for increasing demand in the community for many years to come. This work would be expensive so they approached West Limerick Resources and were awarded a grant of €103,330.89 under our Rural Development Programme (RDP).”

Work got underway at the hall last Autumn and over the intervening months the hall has been completely re-roofed, re-wired, re-plumbed and insulated including the installation of new doors and windows and a new heating system.

Speaking in advance of the launch, Tommy Reidy of Kilfinny Community Council said, “The Committee wishes to thank the people of Kilfinny and surrounding area, those living in various parts of Ireland and overseas who contributed over €25,000 in donations and over €20,000 in short-term bridging loans to this projects. This was a truly amazing feat for such a small community.” He continued on to say, “To all the contractors who completed their contracts on schedule, the Limerick Diocese for providing the lease and all who helped in providing storage, machinery, planning and drawings, costings, surveying and cleaning supplies free of charge we say thank you a thousand times.” The group also wished to acknowledge the cooperation and support of their local parish priest Fr Mulvihill who played an important part in the project along with the volunteer workers who “spent many hours giving their time week after week, days, nights and especially weekends to keep the project moving and to the lady’s who generously provided delicious hot meals to the volunteer workers. Their food was so good there was no problem getting volunteers!”

“This project would not have been possible were it not for the commitment and work of the Community Council and the support of the local community,” says Eleanor. “Community members provided approximately 1000 voluntary labour hours to the project in addition to donations of machinery, skips and storage space from local businesses. West Limerick Resources are delighted to have been able to support this really worthwhile project which will not only provide a vital facility for local community activities but will also help preserve a piece of local history and heritage.”

The hall is now a hive of activity hosting dance classes, community games activities, exercise classes and a variety of parish events and functions on a weekly basis. Plans are also afoot to establish a Go for Life group for senior citizens along with other activities to cater for young and old in the village. This work, in addition to wide range of other village enhancement work being undertaken in the village, is helping to reignite local community spirit.

The official re-opening will be officiated by Shay Riordan Manager of West Limerick Resources and Councilor Stephen Keary in the Parish Hall. Starting at 5pm on Sunday May 13th, the evening will include music from local Comhaltas Ceoltóiri musicians, dancing and children’s entertainment. Specially erected marquees will also be on site offering food and refreshments. All are welcome.

“The Kilfinny Community Council, residents of Kilfinny and surrounding areas are indebted now and will be for many years to come to West Limerick Resources, not just for the grant provided, without which this project could not have been undertaken but also for their professionalism, courtesy and the overall help and advice they provided to our committee,” said Mr Reidy.

Shay Riordan Manager of West Limerick Resources congratulated all involved for their vision, determination and hard work in bringing this project to fruition. “This facility is proof positive of what can be achieved when a community works together and we wish them all the best as they put the wonderful new facility to good use now and for years to come.”

This project has been funded by West Limerick Resources under the Rural Development Programme 2007-2013 which is financed by the Irish Government under the National Development Plan and part-funded by the EU under the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
